Home for the Holidays

I’m home again for Christmas! It’s good to be back and relax next to the toasty wood-burning stove. I stayed up until 4am last night implementing the anti-virus portion of the ubermail article. I also added the amavis mail filter so now I can have mailgraph draw pretty graphs for me. I like pretty graphs.

Unfortunately, it seems like my Chicago network is down and now I can’t access any of my servers back in Chi-town. I’m a little worried about this as it seems either the wireless router or the dsl modem is down. I have no idea why either of these would go down and the unknown worries me. It also means I’m without access to my nix boxen and proxy server at home, which is very depressing.

In any case, I should get outside and do something like chop wood for now.

Speed up Acrobat!

One of the things that always bugged me about Adobe’s Acrobat Reader was the length of time it took to load. Luckily, somebody else had the same frustration and has a good way to make Acrobat load faster [dotnetjunkies.com]. The page specifies Acrobat 6, but I’m still on 5 and it worked like a charm. The way to do it is to remove all the files from the plug_ins folder with the exception of EWH32.api and search.api. The only plugin I didn’t have that the site specified was printme.api, but it seems to be working ok without it.

ubermail

Some dude on slashdot’s mail setup that I want to remember:

  • SMTP + SASL_Authentication over TLS
  • Amavisd+spamassassin+clamav
  • LDAP+Kerberos/SSH user authentication
  • IMAP+SSL and IMAP-SSL(localhost) support

This is somewhat similar to mine with the exception of a couple things that I’d like to implement like the SASL for SMTP and clamav (Anti-Virus for email).

Hello from NM

Hello from New Mexico! I’m down here visiting my sister and my new little nephew. He is absolutely adorable and I’ll have pictures soon enough! We also took a day-long trip to go get a christmas tree in the mountains. That’s what you have to go through to get a decent tree down here in the southwest. In any case, it seems the tomten (you know, the little guy that brings ornaments every year…) showed up here in NM! That was quite nice of him to go out of his way down here. I’ve had a pretty good time here and even got to eat lobster fresh from Boston and see the Lady Lobos (UNM Women’s Basketball) courtesy of my sis’ friend. I have to take off today, though. The aliens in Roswell are calling my name and I must go back to the mothership. Mom always said I wasn’t like the other kids…

Go Orangemen?

I dropped into Syracuse earlier this week to visit Linds. It’s not a bad place and we even managed to find this cool little place that was playing live jazz on a Sunday night. Everything else in downtown Syracuse was closed down! Almost like good ‘ol Rochester. ;)

Couldn’t stay for long, though, as I had to get back and catch up on my relaxing. That also means I have to go get a head start on my sleeping in!
